A Simple Plan

Zestful Blog Post #278

Once in a while, an aspiring writer will feel at a total loss. “I can’t write anything.”

Sometimes the aspiring writer is me. Sometimes, maybe, it’s you. Here’s a Jedi mind trick that always jogs me out of my funk:

“Fine. You can’t write anything. That’s OK. But if you could write something, what would it be?”

Write about what you would write if you could. Just make notes on ideas; you don’t even need complete sentences.

I suggest keeping this in your back pocket, just in case.

  1. An excellent idea! I only wish I could writes quickly enough, or be wide enough awake to capture all the ideas I dream or think of at the most inconvenient moments. LOL In those cases, I guess some is better than none. Thank you for all the fantastic tips.

  2. I do free writing. Just let myself chatter about how bored I am, how angry I am, how I wish I could write something, then argue with myself about what I'm doing wrong and right. Then an idea comes up and it drags me off. Soon I'm looking through notes or polishing a draft story or working on a story line. Just have to get the garbage thinking out of the way.

    1. That's a good way of thinking of it, & handling it, Patricia.

  3. You always have great ideas. I’m going to put it on a sticky note on my laptop. Sometimes I just walk away for a given amount of time and do something mindless, like mop the floor. It helps, too.
